How to deal with a sub-optimal outcome.

Imagine that at the end of a meeting you walk out and have not reached the maximum profit. In other words you left money on the table. 

The old saying goes that a good tradesman is not in for the money but for the advantage he gets out of a deal. If translated into this situation this might change your position from a weak one to a long-term focused one. I was able to observe in many settings, that companies that are always just maximizing profits tend to oversee the long-term relation with the client. This strategy works for a certain time, but if problems arise, the customer is much faster in leaving the supplier. 
Some years ago, I did a small research on the value of trust. In this qualitative research I was able to see that trust allows on the one side to increase pricing, but if the customer finds out that he is paying more than others he will most likely leave forever the customer feels betrayed. At the same time, if the customer is feeling to being treated fairly, he will often work together with you to solve issues. 

So the next time you have the feeling of having left money on the table, you might consider, that you also didn't push too hard and damage the trust between your customer and you.

This is clearly NOT a statement for just always backing off, but one to elaborate on the deals we are closing on a daily basis.
